Kernville Whiskey Flat Fall Festival

Rob attended the First Annual Kernville Whiskey Flat Fall Festival on October 25-26. The event was the first Fall edition of the town’s long standing Whiskey Flat Days. Set up in the cowboy encampment, I portrayed an itinerant photographer making tintype images in the camp. Many customers were intrigued with the process and quite a few had their images struck. The highlight for me was to make an image of Bruce Kratt, Buffalo Bill reenactor, who was there with his Buffalo Bill Cowboys and Indians Exhibition. It was great meeting him and spending time talking with him.

Also interesting was a chance encounter with one of the local merchants. A waste bucket was needed so a quick trip up the road to procure one was in order. The woman asked how I was participating in the fair and was very interested when I said I was making tintypes. She said she might be down later for a picture. Around lunch time I was finishing a plate for a customer and in the corner of my eye I spot a woman in a spectacular outfit all in black. Low and behold it’s the lady from the hardware store. I was about to pose her when she says she has a suggestion. She pulls out of her purse a Carte de Visite of a relative. Her desire was to have a plate made in the same pose, which I was happy to oblige. I ended up making three plates of her and having good conversation along the way.
